I guess u r right no one really should ask these questions until n unless a chemistry is developed between new people. However these questions are asked once u have some kind of a relationship with unknown people and this is every body's right to know about a person he/she is chatting with. Sometimes i find it a bit important coz these are the only questions when we want to start knowing some one, who knows that would be a first step towards new friendship/relationship. I assume that's a reason behind it.

The answer will be Sahaba no doubt. Did they celibrated the birth day ? the answer will be never. Then why you ?. The hidden answer for this will be "We can not follow Mohammed PBUH, It is very hard tuft way therefor we celibrate his birth day showing that inspite of not following him we love him anyway."
